Azhar to do his bit for quake victims

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Former India cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin is busy organising a fashion show to raise money for victims of the Gujarat earthquake.

Azhar Sangeeta Management Services, an event management group promoted by him and his actress wife Sangeeta, will host the show featuring some of the country's leading models on March 11, at a five-star hotel, in Hyderabad.

"They devised the show,'' Rahul Chandra, a spokesman for event managers TeamWork told rediff.com.

Azhar, who faces a life ban, imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for his alleged role in match-fixing, has challenged the BCCI's action in the Hyderabad City Civil Court.

"The fashion show -- The Fabled Peacock: Couture with a difference -- will have live performances by ghazal maestro Talat Aziz, actress Pooja Batra and Miss Asia-Pacific Diya Mirza," Chandra said. Aziz and Diya hail from Hyderabad.

"The ramp show will showcase fashion designers Wendell Rodricks, Krishna Mehra, Gitanjali Kashyap and Manish Malhotra, and leading models Madhu Sapre, Sheetal Malhar, Aditi Govitrikar, Fleur Xavier, Binal Trivedi, Walucha, Svetlana, John Abraham and Tarun Raghavan. Local costumes are being designed by Vinita Pittie, while Sangeeta Chopra will choreograph the show," Chandra added.

Money realised through ticket sales will be handed over to Mrinalini Sarabhai of Darpan Performing Arts of Ahmedabad for the earthquake victims. Proceeds from the sale of donor tickets, priced at Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per couple, will be used primarily for rehabilitation of artisans in Bhuj and Kutch.
