Brett Lee to resume bowling

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee is set to resume bowling in one month, the Australian Cricket Board has announced.

Lee, who had surgery on his right elbow after sustaining an injury during the Carlton Series match against Zimbabwe in Perth on 4 February, visited Mr Greg Hoy, the specialist who performed the operation, in Melbourne on Friday.

The visit confirmed that progress in the month since the surgery - which took place on 6 February - has been very good and Brett has been cleared to resume fitness training in one week and bowling in a month.

The surgery involved repair of the medial ligament and flexor tendon around Lee's right elbow, which was damaged as he threw the ball in from the boundary during the latter stages of the match.

During the surgery, the opportunity was also taken to correct a bony injury that Lee had sustained earlier in his career. The New South Wales fast bowler had previously fractured the ulna bone, which had never completely healed but had also not caused any pain.

The bone was reattached with two screws and bone graft inserted to assist healing.

Lee has now been able to dispense with the elbow brace he has been wearing since the operation but at this stage can only extend his arm to form a right angle.

He will continue to undergo intensive physiotherapy and should eventually have greater movement in the elbow than he had previously.

Australia's next international commitment after its tour of India, which is sponsored by Kelvinator, is a tour of the UK, beginning in late May.

That tour includes the NatWest triangular one-day series against England and Pakistan and a five-Test match Ashes series against England.
