Speed named as new ICC chief executive

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the appointment of Malcolm Speed, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chief, as its new chief executive.

A statement by the ICC said Speed would succeed fellow Australian David Richards.

"As chief executive of Australian cricket for the past four years, Malcolm has most ably demonstrated the qualities required," ICC president Malcolm Gray was quoted as saying.

"We are delighted he has accepted our invitation at a time when the organisation has committed itself to a period of rapid growth and expansion."

Gray praised the outgoing chief executive for his leadership over the last eight years.
