Former Australian Test wicketkeeper dead

Gilbert Langley, who played 26 cricket Tests for Australia between 1951-57, died late yesterday at age 81.

Langley, a wicketkeeper and right-handed batsman, was rated the top international cricketer of the year in 1957 by Wisden, the respected cricket almanack.

A gifted sportsman, Langley also played 11 seasons of senior Australian Rules football and represented South Australia state in 15 interstate Australian Rules football matches.

Langley was also an elected member of South Australia's state parliament for more than 20 years.

He died in a nursing home in Adelaide, the South Australia state capital, after a long illness, Australian media reported today.
