Statistical Highlights

From Mohandas Menon, Bloemfontein

Statistical highlights for the first Test (2nd day)

arrow Shaun Pollock's 4-91was the best figures by a South African captain against India bettering the 3-23 by Hansie Cronje at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 24-2-2000.

arrow The 189 runs partnership between Herschelle Gibbs and Gary Kirsten was South Africa's all-time sixth highest for first wicket in Tests. The best still remains the 260 between Bruce Mitchell and Jack Siedle against England at Cape Town way back in January 1931. The Gibbs-Kirsten partnership could also not better South Africa's best for this wicket against India which still remains as the 236 between Kirsten and Hudson at Calcutta in November 1996.

arrow Incidentally it was the highest for the opening wicket at this ground bettering by a long way the 43 between Adam Bacher and Boeta Dippenaar against Zimbabwe in October 1999.

arrow Gibbs' 107 was his first hundred on South African soil and his fourth overall in his 31st Test and 50th innings. His previous highest score in South Africa was the 85 he made against England at Johannesburg in November 1999.

arrow The 130 run partnership between Jacques Kallis and Neil McKenzie was South Africa's best for the third wicket against India bettering the 114 between Kirsten and Daryll Cullinan at Cape Town in January 1997. The partnership also betters the previous best for this wicket at this venue which was between Cullinan and Kallis against New Zealand in November 2000.

arrow Kallis' unbeaten 49, extends his tally to 438 runs without being dismissed. His previous three scores were: 157*, and 43* (v Zimbabwe at Harare) and 189* (v Zimbabwe at Bulawayo) in September 2001. He went past the South African record of Daryll Cullinan who had made 427 runs before being dismissed - 275* and 152 - against New Zealand at Auckland and Wellington during February and March 1999.

arrow With 334 runs being scored on the second day a total of 706 runs have been scored so far in 177 overs at 3.98 runs per over.
