Australia set Kiwis 284 to win

Australia set New Zealand a target of 284 runs to win the first cricket Test after a series of sporting declarations on the final day on Monday.

Australian captain Steve Waugh helped raise the prospects of a result following three days of heavy rain when he followed Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming's lead by making an early declaration.

Fleming called an end to New Zealand's first innings at lunch when his team reached 287 for eight to avoid having to follow-on.

Australia then declared their innings closed at 84-2 after chasing quick runs with Waugh ending the run-spree less than an hour after lunch.

A minimum of 57 overs were scheduled to be bowled during the rest of the day.
