Ganguly retained captain

Sourav Ganguly has been retained captain of the Indian cricket team for the entire series against England.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India selection committee, which met in Jaipur on Tuesday morning, named Ganguly captain for the three Tests and five one-day internationals against England.

Selection committee chairman Chandu Borde said the team for the series will be picked on Wednesday.

Borde said the selection committee is under no pressure to pick Virender Sehwag and his case would be judged on merit.

The International Cricket Council has said that Sehwag, who had been handed a one-match suspension by match referee Mike Denness, cannot play in the Mohali Test. However, the BCCI feels that the young Indian batsman has already served his ban by not playing in the ongoing third and final match against South Africa and is eligible to play in the first Test against England, beginning on December 3.

Borde also said Javagal Srinath, who was hit on his left hand by a Hayward delivery in Centurion, will not play in the first Test, but Ganguly, who has a neck and back strain, is 70 per cent fit.

Opener Sadgopan Ramesh and Hemang Badani are also fit and available for selection, he added.
