India languish in eighth place in ICC test rankings
Sri Lanka are fourth in the ICC's test rankings after their 2-1 series win over India, who drop a place to eighth in the 10-team table.
Before the Indian series Sri Lanka shared fourth position with West Indies. England remain third, despite their 4-1 defeat by top side Australia, the ICC said on Monday.
Under the system employed by the ICC, cricket's ruling body, Sri Lanka's series win replaces the previous fixture between Sri Lanka and India in 1997/98, when both tests were drawn.
Sri Lanka therefore gain a point while India lose a point.
Pakistan, in seventh place, could extend their lead over India in a home series against New Zealand in October.
