Kirsten puts South Africa in command

South Africa, led by a brilliant 202 not out from Gary Kirsten, were in complete command after the opening day of the first Test against Zimbabwe on Friday, reaching 414-1.

Kirsten became the first South African to hit 5,000 Test runs when he reached 194. Kallis, 56 not out at the close, passed 3,000 runs when he got to 48.

Kirsten joined India's Sachin Tendulkar and Australian Steve Waugh as the only players to have scored centuries against eight countries. Bangladesh, newcomers to the Test arena, are the trio's only exception.

The bulk of South Africa's runs were scored in an opening stand of 256 between Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs, who made 147 before chopping a delivery from Travis Friend on to his stumps.

The partnership was the biggest for the first wicket by any team against Zimbabwe.
