Goodyear (Springbok) Park, Bloemfontein

Goodyear (Springbok) Park, Bloemfontein

About the city:
Bloemfontein, is a city in central South Africa and is the capital of the Free State province. It is also the judicial capital of South Africa. The city, the name of which means "fountain of flowers", is noted for its beautiful natural setting.

Founded by Major H. Douglas Warden in 1846 as a fort and residency, it became the seat of the British-administered Orange River Sovereignty from 1848 to 1854 and of the Orange Free State (an independent Boer republic formed in 1854). The failure of the Bloemfontein Conference (May-June 1899) resulted in the outbreak of the South African War (1899-1902).

The area's economic development was spurred after 1948 with the exploitation of the Free State goldfields. The city lies on a high plateau at an elevation of 4,568 feet (1,392 m) and has spacious and sprawling over hills and kopjes (hillocks). Bloemfontein is the seat of the University of the Orange Free State, which was founded in 1855.

The famous Grey College, which has produced some famous cricketers such as Kepler Wessels, Hansie Cronje, Nicky Boje and Boeta Dippenaar is located here.

About the ground:
It is the home of the Free State Cricket Union and the team is currently called the Goodyear Eagles. First-class matches have been played at this ground since 1989-90 and it has hosted over 70 first-class matches since then. Thirteen ODI matches have been played here since 1992. In the recent tri nation series on October 12, 2001, India had routed Kenya by 10 wickets and with 38.3 overs to spare.

During winter rugby matches are also played at this venue altough the city has a rugby stadium next to the cricket stadium. Floodlights have been installed at this ground since 1992.

The venue had became Test cricket's 80th Test venue on Octoner 29, 1999 when South Africa played Zimbabwe. Since then one more Test match was played here when New Zealand took on the home team in November 2000. The home team has won both the matches here.
