Ponting is Australia's new ODI captain

Ricky Ponting will captain Australia in next month's limited overs series against South Africa in place of Steve Waugh, who was dumped from the side in a shock move by the selectors on Wednesday.

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) announced Ponting's appointment in Melbourne on Saturday.

Adam Gilchrist will be the vice-captain of the team.

Waugh, 36, who remains captain for the three-test series starting in South Africa on February 22, has said that he plans to fight his way back into the one-day side before Australia's World Cup defence in South Africa in 2003.
