Australia recall Gillespie after McGrath ban

Pace bowler Jason Gillespie has been recalled to the Australian one-day squad after Glenn McGrath was suspended and Brad Williams broke his thumb.

The Australian Cricket Board said it hoped Gillespie would join the squad for Sunday's match against South Africa in Melbourne but a decision on whether he would play had not been made.

Gillespie, normally an automatic choice in the side, lost his place after injuring himself in the Test series against New Zealand.

McGrath, however, was suspended on Saturday for one match and also given a two-match suspended sentence for dissent during Australia's one-day defeat to New Zealand.

He will thus miss Sunday's match against South Africa in Melbourne, with the suspended ban coming into force if he reoffends during the month-long triangular series.

McGrath stood his ground after being given out caught behind off spinner Daniel Vettori at the end of the Australian innings, sealing New Zealand's 23-run victory.

Williams broke his thumb in the same match -- his international debut -- and was expected to be sidelined for a month.

He was struck by a delivery from New Zealand pace bowler Shane Bond and is likely to miss the rest of the series.

"To make my debut and play at the MCG was a dream come true, so to have it destroyed like this is a massive let-down," Williams said. "It's certainly meant it will be a debut I won't forget."
