Bevan leads Australia to a thrilling win

Michael Bevan hit an unbeaten 102 to lead his side to a thrilling two-wicket victory in their one-day match against New Zealand on Tuesday after Australia had been 82 for six chasing 246 to win.

Bevan's sixth one-day international century rescued Australia, who are battling to remain in contention for the finals of the triangular series, to win with three balls to spare.

Bevan reached his century off 93 balls as he hit the fourth of five consecutive twos in the 49th over before Andrew Bichel hit two boundaries in the 50th over to take Australia to 248 for eight and seal the win.

New Zealand won the toss and batted first, scoring 245 for eight that included half-centuries from captain Stephen Fleming (50) and all-rounder Chris Cairns (55 off 63 balls).

Chris Harris made 41 off 54 balls before he was run out in the 50th over.

Fast bowler Shane Bond took four wickets for 38 for the Kiwis.

Bevan, who came to the crease at 53 for four, soon lost Steve Waugh (7) and Ian Harvey (12) before sharing partnerships of 61 with Shane Warne (29) and 81 with Brett Lee (27).

Bond dismissed Lee caught at cover in the 48th over.
