Bangladesh fold after Gamage
first-ball strike
Sri Lanka's Chamila Gamage took a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket on Monday as Bangladesh slumped to 164 all out on the second day of the second Test in reply to the home side's first innings of 373.
The right-arm fast medium bowler, who earlier featured in a 64-run stand for the last wicket while batting at number 11, dismissed Mohammad Ashraful to become the first Sri Lankan to achieve the feat and added the wicket of Tushar Imran, leg before, before the tea break.
At the close, Sri Lanka were 25 for the fall of no wickets as opener Michael Vandort was again off to a strong start with 18 runs, after scoring 61 in the first innings.
Fellow opener Jehan Mubarak picked up two before the close.
Sri Lanka fielded a second-string side after their crushing win in the first Test but Bangladesh, without a Test win after two years of trying, still lost their first five batsmen for 51.
Opener Abdul Hannan Sarkar fell leg before to fast medium bowler Buddika Fernando for five, fellow opener Al-Sahariar followed just before lunch, caught off Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya, and the procession continued after the break.
Alok Kopali and Tapash Baisya, both in their Test debuts, were the only batsmen to show any defiance.
Each struck six boundaries, Kopali for 39, and Baisya 52.
Sri Lanka, with nine senior players including off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan rested from the squad, had underlined their superiority by adding 71 to their overnight score of 301 for eight in the morning.
After Sujeewa de Silva fell cheaply, Buddika Fernando and Gamage put on 64 for the final wicket. Gamage was finally caught by Kopali off Talha Jubair after scoring a 46-ball 40 which included eight boundaries.
Bangladesh, granted Test status in 2000, lost the first match of the two-Test series by an innings and 196 runs. Sri Lanka have won 10 of their last 13 Tests.
