Styris powers Kiwis to a stunning win over Windies

The all-round performance of Scott Styris drove New Zealand to a stunning victory over West Indies in the fourth one-day international in Trinidad on Wednesday.

Styris smashed an unbeaten 63 off 72 balls as he and Nathan Astle (91 not out) propped up a flagging New Zealand innings into 212 for five off 44.2 overs, before rain showers caused a lengthy delay.

The 26-year-old from Northern Districts then returned to claim six wickets for 25 runs off seven overs as the West Indies fell nine runs short of their adjusted Duckworth/Lewis target of 212 off 33 overs.

Styris became the second player in one-day history to score a half-century and take six wickets in the same match, following Lance Klusener of South Africa (54 and six for 49 against Sri Lanka in Lahore in 1997).

The victory broke a losing sequence of eight matches for the New Zealanders, who also bounced back in the five-match Cable & Wireless series.

They now trail 1-2 with one match left in St. Vincent on Sunday.

The West Indies' effort was led first by Chris Gayle, who hit a run-a-ball 60, and later by Ridley Jacobs, who lashed two sixes and a four in 60 not out off 45 balls. But Jacobs could not produce an unlikely win and the home team, needing 15 off the last over, closed at 202 for nine.
