Tangier wins go-ahead to host internationals

Tangier has been granted international status, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday, with the Moroccan venue set to host its first one-dayer in August.

An ICC statement said the Tangier Cricket Stadium would be North Africa's first international venue.

ICC match referee Mike Procter visited Morocco last week to carry out a detailed inspection of the ground, facilities and infrastructure.

The ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit endorsed the choice after examining security arrangements surrounding the venue.

Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka are due to compete in a one-day series at Tangier in August.

Morocco has been championed as a major cricket venue in recent months following the refusal of several teams to tour Pakistan because of security concerns.

Cricket in Morocco is administered by the Federation Royale Morocaine De Cricket (FRMC), an affiliate member of the ICC. Tournaments will be organised for the FRMC by the Sharjah-based Cricketers Benefit Fund Series.
