Harris called into NZ second Test squad

One-day specialist Chris Harris was drafted into New Zealand's squad on Sunday for the second Test against England in Wellington which starts on Thursday.

All-rounder Harris was included in the squad as cover for spinner Daniel Vettori, who is doubtful after aggravating a recurring back injury during the first Test won by 98 runs by England in Christchurch on Saturday.

"Vettori is going to be examined to determine how severe the injury is, and we will make our decision based on the advice of our medical experts," said NZ chairman of selectors Richard Hadlee.

"Chris gives us another useful bowling option, is a very experienced campaigner, and he has been in form with the bat, as his very healthy average in the State Championship this season testifies."

Northern Districts seamer Daryl Tuffey replaced injured all-rounder Chris Cairns, who will miss the rest of the series after tearing a tendon in his right knee in the first Test.

"Daryl was unlucky not to make the initial Test squad and he gives us another new ball option on what looks to be a green top at the Basin Reserve, should we decide to go with four seamers," said Hadlee.

New Zealand's frustrating injury crisis deepened still further on Sunday when Hadlee revealed that Chris Martin, the 12th man in Christchurch, would have to undergo a fitness test to confirm his selection.

Hadlee also said Andre Adams had been in the frame for a place in the squad but was ruled out because of a niggling shoulder injury.

The squad:

Stephen Fleming (captain, Wellington), Nathan Astle (Canterbury), Ian Butler (Northern Districts), Chris Drum (Auckland), Chris Harris (Canterbury), Matt Horne (Auckland), Chris Martin (Canterbury), Craig McMillan (Canterbury), Adam Parore (Auckland), Mark Richardson (Auckland), Daryl Tuffey (Northern Districts), Daniel Vettori (Northern Districts), Lou Vincent (Auckland).
