About the city
Formerly known as Gauhati. This town is the capital of the state of Assam, which is located in the northeastern part of India. It lies along the Brahmaputra River and was the capital of the Hindu kingdom of Kamarupa (under the name of Pragjyotisa) around AD 400.

In the 19th century, Guwahati was briefly under Burmese control and from 1826 until 1874 it was the British capital of Assam.

About the ground
The stadium is not used for first-class cricket any more, but have hosted 15 such matches from 1972-73 to 1992-93 (currently all first-class matches are played at the nearby Railway Stadium at Maligaon).

The records:
Since December 1983, nine ODI matches have been hosted here. The home team has appeared in six - winning and losing three each. Zimbabwe lost its only match here to India in March 1993, by seven wickets.
