Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath will have surgery on his left ankle on Friday, Cricket Australia announced.

McGrath will miss the three-match, one-day series against Bangladesh which starts in Cairns on Saturday, and the 33-year-old's fitness will be assessed before the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe in October.

"The surgery will remove a piece of bone from the back of the New South Welshman's ankle which will cause him to miss the three-match (Bangladesh one-day) series," CA said in a statement on Friday.

"McGrath is expected to be released from hospital (in Sydney) tomorrow before beginning rehabilitation work."

Team doctor Trefor James said McGrath had played with the injury for several years.

"However, it has reached a point where the specialist believes the most appropriate course of action for Glenn is surgery, and hopefully that means dealing with the problem once and for all," James said.

"It was also felt that this was the most opportune time to perform the procedure, given that the team is approaching a two-month interval in the international schedule."

The sixth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, McGrath has claimed 430 scalps in 95 Tests, including five for 124 in last month's two-Test series against Bangladesh.
