Nasser Hussain, the former England captain, is doubtful for the fifth Test against South Africa at the Oval starting on September 4 because of a foot injury.

He suffered a fracture of the big toe on his left foot after being hit by Andrew Hall while batting in the fourth Test at Headingley on Saturday, he said on Monday.

Hussain, who stood down as skipper after the first drawn Test against South Africa, told Channel 4: "It's pretty sore and it's broken going into the join but undisplaced at the moment.

"At the moment I can't get a shoe on it. I had injections but I couldn't really feel my foot after a while.

"There had been various conspiracy theories that I had kicked a door down but as you can see (from a TV replay) it wasn't that.

"As for the next Test, we'll just have to see what the medical people say."
