India may have matched the mighty Australians in all departments in the drawn first cricket Test at the Gabba but skipper Sourav Ganguly says there is still room for improvement before the second Test, beginning on Friday.

"It was a good performance by the batsmen and the bowlers but we still need to improve in both departments," he said after the match.

Ganguly, who scored an inspiring 144 in the first innings, said he was happy that the team got a score of 400-plus and expressed hope that the batsmen would carry on the good work.

"It was a big challenge for us. But it is good to get 400 runs in the very first Test and I hope we can carry on."

He said the Indian bowling was a bit depleted in the second innings as Zaheer Khan pulled a hamstring which forced him to sit out after sending down just three overs.

"Zaheer is the spearhead of our attack. His injury is not serious but since we have three more Tests to play and as this one was heading towards a draw we did not take a chance," Ganguly said.

On the slow over rate, Ganguly said the team reduced the gap by three overs in the second innings and added that it would be at the back of the players' minds in the next Test.

Australia skipper Steve Waugh also expressed satisfaction with his team's performance but praised the Indians for their good show.

"India really batted well and gave us no chance," he said.

Waugh said he is not worried about the failure of his bowlers to dismiss India for a low score in the first innings.

"They bowled well in patches. I don't think there is much to worry about."
