Australia's leading wicket-taker Shane Warne says he is confident he will be selected to tour Sri Lanka in March, a month after his 12-month doping ban is completed.

"There's obviously a lot of things go in it and they'll take two or maybe three spinners to Sri Lanka," Warne, Test cricket's second-leading wicket-taker with 491 victims, told Australia television on Friday.

"So I like to think if I'm bowling well and I've presented myself in the best possible way that I'm a chance," added Warne, one of Wisden's five cricketers of the 20th century.

Shane WarneThe 34-year-old leg-spinner was banned for a year in February after testing positive for a banned diuretic.

His suspension, which rocked the sport after the Australian sensationally departed the World Cup without playing a match, expires on February 10, 2004.

Australia arrive in Sri Lanka on February 14 for a series of five one-day internationals from February 20 to 29 followed by a three-test series starting on March 8.

"But if it doesn't work out then so be it, all I can do is present myself in the best possible way and bowl well for Victoria," Warne added.

"I think if I'm lucky enough to get selected for Victoria, I've got a couple of four-day games and a couple of one-day games plus a second eleven game (before Australia name their Test squad).

"So hopefully by then the selectors would have had a good look at me and say 'well look we're happy with his bowling,' and I'm a chance for selection.

"I've been doing my fitness work and I'm pretty fit at the moment now I've just got to get match-fit and start bowling."

Australia leg-spinner Stuart MacGill, who has taken 137 wickets in 27 matches, said this week his Test career could be over if Warne was rushed back into the side.

"If Shane does come back for the first test in Sri Lanka that means I've got three Tests (in the current home series against India) to go and that's it," MacGill, 32, told local newspapers.

"I probably won't play again. Any wicket I get from now until Sri Lanka is a bonus. It's obviously out of my control."
