Rohan Gavaskar seals win for India 'A'

India (341-3) beat Nottinghamshire (339-5 declared) by 7 wickets

India forefited their first innings, Notts forfeited their second.

Rohan Gavaskar cracked a brilliant unbeaten century as India 'A' cruised to a 7-wicket victory against Nottinghamshire in a rain-affected three-day game at Trent Bridge.

Gavaskar struck 139 not out from 181 balls, with 17 fours and four sixes, to lead India 'A' to 341 for three, past the Notts total of 339.

Earlier, Notts, who had ended day 1 at 265 for three on the opening day, declared their first innings at 339 for five and then forfeited their second innings. India 'A' forfeited their first innings and started chasing a score of 340 in their second innings.

Gavaskar was ably supported by Satyajit Parab who scored a quick 90 (16 fours) and A T Rayudu, who made an unbeaten 71, in the team's march to victory.

The Notts innings was built around a solid unbeaten 161 runs from Usman Afzaal and half centuries from Darren Bicknell and Gareth Clough.

L Balaji and Murali Kartik took two wickets each while Irfan Pathan claimed one.

India 'A' next play a one-day game against Leicestershire on Sunday at Grace Road

Streak criticises schedule

Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak has taken a swipe at the scheduling of the NatWest Series ahead of his side's double-header this weekend.

After the all-African clash in Wales on Saturday, Zimbabwe face England in Bristol the following day. Last weekend, South Africa played two games in two days.

"It's something the International Cricket Council have been asked to avoid," Streak said.

"From our side, it's just a thing of fairness. South Africa and Zimbabwe both have back-to-back games, but England don't.

"We don't have a problem with that as long as all teams have the same schedule."

Murali for Kent

Kent have signed Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for the rest of the county season.

He will make his debut for the county on 27 July in a National League game against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

"We are thrilled to have Murali with us for the latter part of the season," said Ian Brayshaw, Kent's director of cricket.

"As we found with Steve Waugh last year, to have a player of such international standing has a huge impact throughout the club and it will be a particularly good opportunity for our younger players to learn from one of the world's greatest bowlers."

The 31-year-old will replace Andrew Symonds, who has been picked by Australia for a home one-day series against Bangladesh.
