Sachin Tendulkar will make his comeback after hand surgery in a domestic match in September, an Indian cricket official said on Friday.

The India batsman will play for national champions Mumbai in their five-day match against a Rest of India side, Ratnakar Shetty, joint secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association said.

Tendulkar had an operation in April to repair a long-term bone injury to his left ring finger and has not played since India's World Cup final defeat against Australia in March.

"Tendulkar has said he will be playing," Shetty said, adding that most India players are keen to use the season-opening game in Madras from September 18 as a warm-up for the New Zealand series starting the following month.

India host New Zealand for two Tests and a one-day tri-series also featuring Australia.

India have not played a Test since their 2-0 series rout in New Zealand in December.
