Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas is replacing Wasim Akram as Hampshire county cricket club's overseas player until the end of the season.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim, who is a diabetic, left Hampshire two weeks ago because of ill health.

Vaas, who has played 68 Test matches and 227 one-day internationals for Sri Lanka, is due to make his debut for Hampshire on August 4 in a one-day game. He has not played county cricket before.

"I am delighted that Chaminda had agreed to join and received clearance from the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to do so," said manager Paul Terry on the English club's web site.

The 29-year-old made it into the record books when he took a hat-trick with the first three balls of the match as Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh in the World Cup earlier this year.

His Sri Lanka team mate Muttiah Muralitharan joined Kent earlier this month.

Division two Hampshire are fourth of 10 in the one-day competition and eighth of nine in the county standings. Their season ends on September 21.
