It's rainin' fours and sixes

Matthew Hayden's record-breaking 380 in the first innings of the first Test against Zimbabwe was a show of batsmanship of the highest quality.

Matthew HaydenThe big, burly left-hander from Queensland put the Zimbabwean bowling to the sword as fours and sixes rained all over the Western Australia Cricket Association Ground in Perth.

Hayden hit a total of 11 sixes and 38 boundaries, making for a total of 218 runs, or more than 50 per cent (57.37 to be precise), in boundaries.

But Hayden fell just short of the all-time record set by Englishman John Edrich in the third Test against New Zealand at Leeds in 1965.

Edrich, also a left-hander, slammed 52 fours and five sixes (a total of 238 runs) in boundaries in his score of 310 not out in England's first innings total of 546 for 4 declared.
