Ponting pays tribute to his stand-ins

Ricky Ponting paid tribute to last-minute stand-ins Brad Williams and Nathan Bracken after the two quick bowlers set up Australia's eight-wicket one-day win over New Zealand on Wednesday.

"These guys have been in the fringe playing a lot of cricket in Australia for the last couple of years," he said.

"They have not got much of an opportunity and when they got it they have done themselves and the team proud."

The 28-year-old Williams, who had played only seven one-dayers and one Test before coming on tour, was the man of the match in the triangular series encounter, taking four for 22 as New Zealand were routed for 97.

He and Bracken, who took three for 25, were selected because of injuries to Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee.

Williams began as an out-and-out quick for Victoria and was regarded as the fastest in Australian first-class cricket until Lee arrived.

Injuries and poor performances undermined his career before a switch to Western Australia in 1999-00 helped him regain his rhythm.

"I just tried to run in and hit the wicket," Williams told reporters on Wednesday.

"There was a bit of moisture in the air and it swung around a bit, a bit of grass on the wicket, so it seamed as well."

Asked about his lack of opportunities to play at the top level, he added: "I suppose it does (frustrate) a bit.

"It is always hard not knowing whether you will play or not. You have got to use every opportunity you get.

"At the moment my rhythm is pretty good."
