International Cricket Council Match Referee Chris Broad said the bowler had breached the ICC's Code of Conduct for players and team officials.

McGrath was reported for a Level 1 offence under clause 1.4 which relates to 'using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting'.

The report was made by all four officiating umpires.

Broad said: "It is important that all players continue to observe ICC guidelines that protect the values, integrity and spirit of the game.

"The on-field umpires came to the defence of Glenn McGrath during the hearing given his exemplary behaviour prior to the offence.

"Evidence was brought to the hearing that Ricky Ponting approached Glenn McGrath and immediately took control of the situation, and we were satisfied that this was the appropriate course of action."

Separately, Cricket Australia announced no further action would be taken against McGrath under the players' Spirit of Cricket Code.
