A final-session collapse, prompted by the leg spin of Ramnaresh Sarwan, left Bangladesh on the back foot after the fourth day of the first Test against West Indies at Gros Islet in St Lucia on Monday.

Bangladesh, who had a first-innings advantage of 64 after dismissing the home team for 352, were 94 for six at the close to take a lead of 158 into the final day.

Sarwan claimed three for 22 as the tourists lost four wickets for nine runs after making a solid start to their second innings.

Rajin Saleh was unbeaten on 34 while Khaled Mashud, who successfully defended Sarwan's hat-trick ball, was on eight.

Only 13 overs were possible in the morning session after a heavy downpour. West Indies, resuming on 262 for five, reached lunch on 303 for five.

Centurion Chris Gayle fell soon after the restart for 141, Tapash Baisya finding the edge to have the opener caught at the second attempt by Habibul Bashar at first slip.

Ridley Jacobs finished unbeaten on 46 but the tail failed to wag, Mushfiqur Rahman mopping up to finish with four for 65.

The Bangladeshis have yet to win a Test after 28 matches, losing 26 times and drawing twice, both against Zimbabwe.
