England's preparations for the first Test against West Indies suffered a blow on Tuesday with an injury to top-order batsman Mark Butcher which puts his participation at Sabina Park next week in doubt.

Butcher strained ankle ligaments when he fell awkwardly while fielding in the three-day match against Jamaica at the ground in Kingston where the Test will be played and is not expected to take any further part.

The second day of the match ended with England 50 for one, 89 runs ahead after bowling Jamaica out for 281 in reply to their first innings total of 320.

Marcus Trescothick was not out 21, while Paul Collingwood was on six. Graham Thorpe was the batsman dismissed, for 18, when he was caught by wicketkeeper Matthew Sinclair off Evon McInnis for 18.

England captain Michael Vaughan rotated his bowlers throughout the day in an effort to give them all some match practice in local conditions, with swing bowler Matthew Hoggard and fast-medium pacer James Anderson finishing with three wickets each.

Mario Ventura (53) top-scored for Jamaica before he was run out while opening batsman Shawn Findlay (51) also grabbed a half-century.

Sinclair (42) and McInnis (41) were the other notable contributors to Jamaica's total.
