Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar is bringing together former cricketers to form a trust that will extend financial help to needy players.
The trust will run with money donated by affluent former cricketers like Gavaskar himself, who says it would suffice if financially sound cricketers give away the pension they receive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The BCCI has begun giving former Test players Rs 5,000 as monthly pension, which many like Gavaskar want to give away to good causes.
Gavaskar informally discussed his proposal with Brijesh Patel, Ravi Shastri and Bishen Singh Bedi during a meeting of the BCCI in Kolkata on Saturday.
All of them agreed to the proposal and the trust is likely to be up and running soon.
The trust would help former Test and first class cricketers. Gavaskar is believed to have been hugely moved by the condition of former cricketers like Salim Durrani, who is living in penury.
