A six-wicket haul by speedster Narender Pal Singh enabled hosts Hyderabad to record an 85-run victory over Maharashtra and win full four points in the Ranji Elite `B' match played at Gymkhana grounds on Saturday.

Resuming at 168 for nine, the hosts lost Fahad Shahnawaz for the addition of two runs and set a winning target of 318 but visitors could notch up only 233 despite the splendid effort of Dheeraj Jadhav who compiled a defiant and unbeaten 124.

N P Singh was the wrecker-in-chief and accounted for six wickets for 87 runs on a chilly day as the hosts opened their account in Group B with four points while Maharashtra is yet to add a point to its credit.

The team was reduced to 3 for 39 before skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar (15) and Kaushik Aphale (16) provided some support to Dheeraj.

Dheeraj's patient knock of 124 was the result of his 319-minute stay on the wicket with 11 fours and one six from the 215 balls he faced and carried the bat.

Keeper Satyajit Satbhai (43) joined Dheeraj to script a 58-run fifth wicket partnership and lift the score to 165 before N P Singh ripped through the lower order and bundled the visitors out for 233.

Besides N P Singh, debutant Shahnawaz took two wickets for 34 runs while Daniel Manohar and Venkatapathy Raju claimed a wicket each.

Hyderabad scored 231 and bowled Maharashtra out for 83 in the first innings and swelled its lead to 318 by compiling 170 in the second essay. The visitors were all out for 233 to give hosts four points and an outright win.

This was the 100th first class match hosted by Gymkhana ground and also the 100th first class match for home skipper Venkatapathy Raju, who was elated at the victory.
