Shane Warne had come close to claiming one of cricket's most prestigious records before, but it somehow eluded him. But on Friday there was no stopping the leg-spinner, who goes by the nickname 'Hollywood'.

Warne had drawn level with Muttiah Muralitharan on 527 Test wickets at Cairns earlier this year without being able to claim sole possession of the record for most Test wickets.

"At the moment it's a bit of a blur," said Warne, who surpassed the Sri Lankan off-spinner's mark of 532 wickets by dismissing Irfan Pathan on the morning of day 2 in the second Test against India in Chennai.

"It's been a long time. I never thought I'd be in this situation when I first started.

"Obviously, it felt pretty special. It was a special moment, especially here in India," he added.

Warne was appreciative of the crowd, which towards the end of the day kept chanting 'Warnie, Warnie'.

"The crowd here understood what was going on and they were very appreciative. To have them clapping and chanting my name was pretty special."

The 35-year-old bowler ended the second day of the Test with three wickets for 93 runs to take his total haul to 534 victims. He is hopeful of swelling it in the next few weeks as Muralitharan is out of cricket due to injury.

"It has gone so fast. I'm up to 114 Tests and I have missed probably 30 through injuries and things, but I feel very proud to get the record; I never thought I would," he said.

He summed up his joy about gaining sole possession of the record, saying: "I suppose I'll take five minutes with my wife tonight and just reflect and say that was pretty good."
