Shivnarine Chanderpaul made a career best score as records tumbled on the second day of the first Test between the West Indies and South Africa on Friday.

Chanderpaul was 177 not out as the West Indies reached 490 for four after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Ryan Hinds was 36 not out in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 100.

The total is the West Indies highest in Tests against South Africa, surpassing the 427 they scored in Cape Town in 2003-04.

Chanderpaul and Wavell Hinds shared 284 for the fourth wicket, the highest partnership for any wicket for the West Indies against South Africa.

The previous record was the 174 Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle put on for the fourth wicket in Centurion in 2003-04.

Hinds scored 213, the highest score by a West Indian against South Africa.

Brian Lara's 202, which he scored in Johannesburg in 2003-04, was the previous best.

The morning session was reduced to an hour's play by mopping up operations following overnight rain.

The West Indies resumed on 347 for three, and picked up from where they left off on Thursday against South Africa's lacklustre bowling.

Hinds went to his double century when he opened the face of his bat as he pushed forward to a delivery from fast bowler Andre Nel.

But he was dismissed in the fifth over after lunch when he edged a delivery from fast bowler Charl Langeveldt to be caught behind by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

He batted for eight hours, faced 297 balls and hit 34 fours and two sixes.

Chanderpaul has scored his runs off 319 balls with 20 fours. His previous best was the 140 he scored against India in Georgetown in 2002.
