He has been shouldering the responsibility of batting at the number seven slot for the Indian one-day cricket team for quite a while now and is willing to do that till it is in the best interest of the team.

But given a choice, Mohammad Kaif would prefer to bat in a position where he gets "more overs to bat."

"It is not easy to bat at number seven, especially in the sub continent. With the field spread out and the ball getting softer, it is difficult to hit big shots but you are expected to score quick runs which gets difficult at times.

"But I have no complaints about it as I am doing a good job and the team management is happy with it," Kaif said on the sidelines of the PSPB's Silver Jubilee Awards function in New Delhi on Thursday.

"But if you ask me, it (batting at that position) won't be a personal choice. In fact no batsman would personally opt for this position in the world."

The 25-year-old, who has scored 1860 runs in 87 ODIs so far, was, however, quick to add that he was willing to continue playing at the same position till the team managements wants him to.

Asked what would be his ideal batting position, Kaif declined a clear answer and said "I will just like more overs to bat."

Looking back at his performance in the season Kaif said he had a few ups and downs but was satisfied with his overall performance.

The Allahabad-based cricketer, who guided Central Zone to the Duleep Trophy triumph, said the added responsibility of leading the zonal as well as the state team helped him a lot in maturing as a cricketer.

"It is challenging to lead a team from the front. It is a pressure job and it helped me a lot."

On missing out on a regular berth in the Test squad, Kaif said he was not worried about things which were not in his hand and was keen to keep performing well in the domestic circuit and wait for the chance.

"I will keep scoring runs and remind the selectors that I am there. As a player my focus will be to keep performing."

Kaif said the knock (55 in the third Test in Nagpur) against the Australian bowling attack gave him tremendous confidence and has become a completely different player since then.

The youngster, considered to be one of the best fielder in the team, was all praise for outgoing coach John Wright and said the New Zealander was instrumental in incorporating the importance of fitness and dedication in the players.

On his immediate plans, Kaif said he will rest for a couple of weeks and then get back to training.
