Uncapped left arm pace bowler Mitchell Johnson has been called into Australia's one-day squad to replace Brett Lee for the final match of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series against New Zealand.

Lee is returning to Australia to have surgery on his nasal passage to correct breathing problems.

Johnson is to fly to New Zealand later on Thursday and join the squad in Christchurch for Saturday's final match in the annual one-day series.

"Mitchell Johnson is a young player that we've had our eye on for a while," chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said in a statement.

"We felt this was an ideal opportunity, with one game to go in the series, to get him involved in the Australian one-day international team environment.

"It is certainly a selection with a view to the future."

The 24-year-old Queensland player, who is not one of Cricket Auustralia's 25 contracted players, said he was excited to get the call.

"Even though it's only for one match, I'm pretty excited to be given the chance to be involved in the Australian squad, and thrilled that the selectors even have me in their thoughts," said Johnson.

Australia wrapped up the series on Wednesday in Wellington with a thrilling two-run victory. Andrew Symonds made 156 in Australia's 322 for five, while New Zealand were bowled out for 320 in the final over.
