Confident Australia off to England for defence of Ashes

Australia's cricketers flew out of Brisbane bound for England on Saturday in confident mood for their Ashes defence.

Australia are strong favourites to win the five-Test series but captain Ricky Ponting said his players were not feeling any extra pressure.

"We're probably going to go into this series as favourites as we have been in every series we've played over the last five or six years, so it really is no different for us," Ponting told reporters.

England have risen to number two in the world rankings after an impressive run of form, and Ponting wants his team to strike early to dent their opponents' confidence.

"It's important that we get off to a good start in the one-day series, although I'm not a big believer in taking momentum from the one-day series into a Test series," he said.

"If we can create some doubts in a couple of the individuals' minds that'll be good for us."

Australia's tour begins with a Twenty20 match against England at Southampton on June 13 before a triangular limited-overs tournament also involving Bangladesh and a separate one-day series against England.

The five-match Ashes Test series starts at Lord's on July 21 with the final Test at the Oval due to start on September 8.

"The great thing about this tour for us with the 10 one-dayers is that we will get a lot of good competitive cricket under our belts before the Test matches come around, so by the 21st of July you should see most of our guys in pretty good shape," Ponting said.

"There's extra incentive for me, I guess, as well being my first Ashes tour as captain.

"It's a great tour, a really fun tour to be on.

"You learn a lot about yourself and a lot about the rest of the guys in your side. You're travelling together around on the bus for three-and-a-half months and you have a lot of good times, and hopefully that will reflect in the cricket that we play."
