Australia leg spinner Shane Warne and his wife Simone announced the break-up of their marriage on Saturday.

"It is with regret that we inform you that we have decided to separate," the couple said in a joint statement issued through Warne's brother and manager Jason.

"We remain best of friends and we will both continue to be there for our three beautiful children."

The 35-year-old Warne, regarded by many as the best spin bowler in cricket history, holds the world record for Test wickets at 583.

Nicknamed "Hollywood", he has rarely been out of the limelight as a player but has also had to endure seemingly endless tabloid headlines for boisterous post-match celebrations, phone sex and drug scandals.

His marriage survived an alleged liaison with a British nurse in 2000 and he was the subject of further tabloid sex allegations in Britain earlier this month.

Warne, one of five players named as Wisden's cricketers of the 20th century, captains English county side Hampshire, although he has been given a two-week break to prepare for Australia's Ashes series against England.

He has not played a one-day international since he failed a drugs test on the eve of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

With his focus on the county game, Warne moved his family to England earlier this year, saying: "For the next three to four years, this is home.

"We'll still be going back to Australia when I play in the Test series and also for Victoria but England is home for the moment."
