England captain Michael Vaughan has been ruled out of the first Test match against Pakistan with a knee injury, an England team spokesman said on Thursday.
"The England selectors have appointed Marcus Trescothick as captain for the first Test in Vaughan's absence," Andrew Walpole, the England team's media manager, told a news conference in Multan.
"He will continue to lead the side if Vaughan is unavailable for any remaining matches on the tour," he said.
"Vaughan will continue to receive treatment and a further update will be issued in due course of time."
Vaughan, 31, who has played 62 Tests, injured his right knee while taking a third run during the three-day tour defeat by Pakistan A in Lahore on Monday.
The same knee injury also kept him out of a Test against New Zealand last year at Lord's.

The 29-year old left handed opener said it was a great honour for him to lead the country again after guiding England to a seven-wicket victory in his first match in charge 18 months ago.
"I have fond memories of doing the job before against New Zealand in (May) 2004 at Lord's and I am happy to take on the responsibility again."
Trescothick has scored England's only century on the Pakistan tour, a masterful 124 against the Patron's XI in Rawalpindi in the three-day tour match which laid the foundations for victory.
But he failed in both innings of the second tour match in Lahore that England lost by six wickets to a young Pakistan A side.
