PCB to hold inquiry into Afridi incident

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is to hold an independent inquiry into the incident involving Shahid Afridi scuffing the pitch on the second day of the second Test against England in Faisalabad.

"Afridi has apologised for his behaviour and he has also been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee. But we will hold our own inquiry as it is not an incident in good taste," PCB director Abbas Zaidi said on Tuesday.

All rounder Afridi has been banned for one Test and two one-day internationals against England after pleading guilty to damaging the pitch.

The 25-year-old described his actions as a "moment of madness".

"I really don't know what happened or what I was doing out there on the pitch. I know on camera it looked very bad and I feel I have let myself and the team down," Afridi said.

"I really regret my actions because I have always played the game in the proper spirit."

"I know what I did was a big mistake and it will remain a stigma for me all my life. As a senior member of the Pakistan team I know what my responsibilities are," he added.

Match referee Roshan Mahanama found Afridi guilty of a level three breach of the ICC code of conduct and of violating the spirit of the game after the incident which was picked up by television cameras.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen said the incident had not soured the relationship between the teams.

"The ICC has dealt with it appropriately. He came and apologised this morning when we were going out to bat," Pietersen said.

Afridi will miss the third Test from November 29 and the first two one-day internationals on December 10 and 12 against England by which time Zaidi said the inquiry would be completed.

Zaidi also said the Pakistan board had conveyed its concern to the ICC regarding the run out of Inzamam-ul Haq on the second day of the match.

"It is evident that Inzamam took evasive action to avoid injury and according to the laws should not have been given out.

"This issue was brought to the match referee's attention in writing by the Pakistan national coach and by the chairman of the PCB in a telephone conversation with the ICC president immediately after the incident," Zaidi said.

Inzamam was run out on 109 when bowler Steve Harmison threw down the stumps after collecting the ball in his follow-through as the Pakistan skipper moved away to avoid being hit.

Third umpire Nadeem Ghouri ruled Inzamam was out of his crease although the law says a batsman cannot be run out if he is not attempting a run and is taking evasive action to avoid injury.
