Wasim Jaffar (267) and Amol Muzumdar (95) missed personal milestones but Mumbai tightened the noose around Delhi's neck, piling up a mammoth 551 on day two of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'A' opener at the Firozeshah Kotla in Delhi on Thursday.
In reply, Delhi made a cautious start, reaching 40 for no loss, with openers Aakash Chopra (16) and Varun Kumar (12) at the crease.
After Mumbai resumed their innings on 329 for two, threatening to pile up a huge score, Delhi got two quick breakthroughs, removing both the overnight batsmen.
Left arm pacer Kunal Lall first trapped Amol Muzumdar plumb in front; the middle order bat could add just two runs to his overnight score before returning five-run shy of a well deserved ton. That marked the 313-run third-wicket partnership between him and Jaffar.
Jaffar, too, could not reach a triple ton and edged a Sarandeep Singh delivery to Aakash Chopra to perish after a 364-ball knock of 267, which was studded with 38 boundaries and the treble of sixes he hit yesterday.
Though Omkar Khanvilkar's (12) run-out brought some cheer again for the hosts, Nishit Shetty (87 off 136 balls, 4x9) frustrated them.
Spinner Chetanya Nanda's double strike -- he removed Ramesh Powar (18) and Vinayak Samant (2) -- had little impact on the game.
Nanda ran through the Mumbai lower order, claiming four for 108 but it was too late by then.
