Australia were 229 for three in their first innings, trailing West Indies by 176 runs, at stumps on the second day of their third and final Test on Saturday.
Brad Hodge was unbeaten on 13 with Mike Hussey yet to score after Justin Langer (99), Ricky Ponting (56) and Matthew Hayden (47) lost their wickets.
West Indies had earlier made 405 in their first innings with Brian Lara contributing 226 to break Allan Border's world record for the most Test runs.
Lara started the day on 202, needing a further 12 runs to pass Border, and reached the milestone with a single off Glenn McGrath to a standing ovation at Adelaide Oval.
