Pakistan to target Vaughan in third Test

Pakistan plan to target England captain Michael Vaughan and try to put him under pressure in the third and final Test starting on Tuesday.

Vaughan, who missed the first Test due to a knee injury and scored only two and nine in the second match in Faisalabad, is regarded by Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq as England's key player.

"He is a successful captain and one of their top batsmen. He is going through a bad patch and we will try to put him under as much pressure as we can. If he doesn't get runs the England team will also come under pressure," Inzamam told Reuters on Monday.

While Vaughan has had a disappointing tour with England having lost a tour match in which he sustained his knee injury and also the first Test in Multan, Inzamam has been inspirational for his team.

Inzamam, a seasoned campaigner of 104 Tests, scored two half centuries in the first Test and two centuries in the second, drawn match and has handled his players well under pressure. He is 45 short of 8,000 Test runs.

"Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick are their two main players and if we can control them we will have a big edge in this Test," Inzamam said.

He said it was natural that when a captain scored runs he was confident and his confidence passed on to his team.

Trescothick has been one of England's main scorers on the tour, including 193 in the first innings of the first Test, but his regular opening partner Andrew Strauss has returned home for the birth of his child and will miss the deciding match.

"Trescothick and Strauss have been their regular opening pair for a while now. They will have a new opening pair in this Test and that is another area we can exploit," Inzamam said.
