Sandeep Patil, the India 'A' team coach for the Challenger Trophy, says he would prefer a longer duration as coach to get an opportunity to work closely with the players and make them ready to take on the seniors.
"It is very important to have a coach for a longer duration. You know the players better and can work with them closely, but, unfortunately, that has not happened. I had written to the BCCI about this, but got no reply from them," Patil told reporters in Mohali on Sunday.
He said though the Board informed him two weeks in advance about coaching the India 'A' team for the Challenger series, the time of five to six days is too short a period to sustain a good effort.
Asked about the feedback he got from his team, which is being captained by V V S Laxman, Patil said, "The players have approached me with their problems. I told them it is important for them how they move ahead in their careers. This series is a greater challenge for both India 'A'
and India 'B' teams, a wonderful opportunity to take on their seniors.
"The series is important as we will be playing Sri Lanka and South Africa in upcoming tournaments. It will give an opportunity for the players to display their skills as also provide a chance for the selectors, coach and the captain."
Patil said that he is in Mohali to support Team India coach Greg Chappell and provide feedback about the team.
Asked if the coach should have a role in selection, he said it is for the Board to decide and added he is happy with the job at hand.
