India Test opener Wasim Jaffer underwent a shin operation and has been advised rest for three weeks.

"I was having problem in my right shin for quite some time and decided to undergo surgery to set it right before the West Indies tour," the Mumbai opener said on Wednesday.

BCCI-appointed doctor Anant Joshi performed the operation last Thursday.

"I am able to walk but cannot run for three weeks," Jaffer said.

The batsman has time on his hands to get fit before the national selectors decide on the combination for the four-Test series following the five one-day internationals in the West Indies.

Jaffer, who made a comeback into the Indian squad for the tour to Pakistan without playing any of the Tests, is not in contention for the one-day squad to be chosen in Mumbai on Thursday.

The five one-day internationals are slated between May 20 and 28 and the first Test follows from June 1 in Antigua.

The Indian squad will leave for West Indies on May 12.
