Jhulan Goswami's economical bowling spell went in vain as India went down to England by three wickets in the fourth women's one-day international and lost the five-match series, at the Rose Bowl, in Southampton, on Thursday.

Goswami claimed three for 20 with her medium pacers but India's total of 192 for 8 proved too inadequate to defend.

The visitors, who have not won a single ODI on the tour so far, will play the inconsequential final match on August 29 to salvage some pride.

Seventeen-year-old Sarah Taylor proved England's star as she led a recovery from a tricky 60 for four and guided them home with more than four overs to spare.

Sarah top-scored with 61 from 63 balls, inclusive of six fours, and featured in a 77-run partnership with Jenny Gunn that turned the match in England's favour.

Gunn hit a patient 46 from 89 balls.

The Indian innings revolved around a half-century by Anjum Chopra and valuable contributions from skipper Mithali Raj and Hemlata Kala.

Chopra (53) and Raj (47) featured in a 108-run association that lifted the Indians from an embarrassing 1 for 2 before the former added another 51 runs with Kala (40).

Four run-outs, however, ruined the visitors' innings.
