Bowling coach a must: Vengsarkar

India's chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar on Friday urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to appoint a bowling coach for the team, a suggestion that may not go down well with coach Greg Chappell who has opposed such a move all along.

"Bowling coach is a must. I have asked the Board to appoint a bowling coach. But now it is upto the Board to appoint one," said Vengsarkar, who was in Kolkata to watch the Mumbai-Bengal Ranji Trophy Elite Group match.

Chappell has publicly dismissed several times suggestions to have a bowling coach in the support staff, pointing out that biomechanist Ian Frazer is there for the job.

Vengsarkar, however, refused to lay the blame for India's below par performance in the one-day series against South Africa on Chappell.

"It is the team which is not performing well. The coach cannot go out and play," the former Indian captain said.

Asked about chances of Sourav Ganguly making it to the World Cup squad following his selection in Test team, he said: "World Cup is too far away. I cannot talk about the future, but the criteria will be current form and fitness for any player to make it to the World Cup team."

He also refused to commit on Ganguly making it to playing eleven for the Test series against South Africa saying, "I cannot decide from here, I will go to South Africa and see."

Vengsarkar justified Ganguly's recall, saying he had been included in the team after taking into account his experience of playing on South African tracks.

"I hope he will come good."

He supported the move to introduce performance-based incentives for players and said he had been advocating this for a long time.

The former Indian captain, who played 116 Tests, also said that Virender Sehwag had been stripped of vice-captaincy to help him focus on his batting.

The national selectors on Thursday recalled Ganguly in the Test team while appointing V V S Laxman as the vice-captain for the Tests.
