Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene has undergone appendix surgery in Wellington and is due to return home from the tour of New Zealand over the weekend, New Zealand Press Association reported on Thursday.

Jayawardene played both matches of the recent Test series, which was drawn 1-1, but was not part of the squad for two Twenty20 games and five one-day internationals over the next three weeks.

He was struck on the wrist by a ball from New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond during the second Test and was unable to keep wicket in the hosts' second innings.

All-rounder Malinga Bandara and Ruchira Perera are due to join up with the one-day squad after completing a Sri Lanka A tour of West Indies on Friday.
