Sri Lanka got a scare before thwarting the inspirational fight from associate side Scotland by four wickets on the opening day of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday.

Scotland recovered from 30 for 5 to post 186 thanks to captain Kasaim Farid, who made a fighting 76 from 89 balls.

Excellent bowling from Gordon Goudie of Scotland helped reduce Sri Lanka to 54 for 4 before useful contributions from Sachithra Serasinghe (64) and captain Angelo Mathews (37 not out) bailed them out.

But the result could have been different. Serasinghe was caught off a no ball on 30 and four runs later survived a dropped chance at third man.

Scotland were themselves to be blamed as they conceded 38 extras, including 22 wides and 11 no-balls, and in the end that helped tip the balance in Sri Lanka's favour despite Goudie's brilliant spell of 3 for 25 in 10 overs.

Earlier, Sri Lanka's seam bowlers had taken advantage of early life in the pitch to wreck the Scotland top order.

Mathews and his fellow seamers Thisara Perera and Shalika Karunanayake shared eight wickets on a surface that was covered on the eve of the game because of heavy rain.

Scotland and Sri Lanka are in Group C along with Namibia and India.

Bangladesh vs New Zealand:

Bangladesh got off to a winning start at the expense of New Zealand in Group A's first match at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo on Sunday.

But it was a far from straightforward victory for the side that is one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Mushfiqur Rahim's side bowled New Zealand out for just 175 but were then reduced to 5-2 and then 123-6 before romping home by three wickets.

It was a win built on the performance of the Bangladesh spinners with Mehrab Hossain capturing 4-29 while Mohammad Sohrawardi took 3-36.

Their combined efforts facilitated a New Zealand collapse that saw Marc Ellison's team slip from a comfortable 100 for 2 to 175 all out.

Todd Astle top scored for them with 44 but the next highest contribution from the batsmen was 28 from fellow opener Martin Guptill and only two other players - captain Ellison and Roneel Hira, each with 22 - reached 20.

Both sides are part of Group A that also includes holders Pakistan and Uganda. Only two sides can progress to the Super League quarter-final.
