Glenn McGrath has ruled himself out of Australia's remaining international matches this summer after his wife was diagnosed with cancer, Cricket Australia announced on Sunday.

McGrath had already pulled out of Australia's one-day matches against South Africa in Melbourne on Friday and Sydney on Sunday after revealing his wife Jane had been diagnosed with cancer for a third time and needed immediate radiotherapy treatment.

Australia's chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns released a statement on Sunday saying McGrath had informed the selection panel that he was unavailable for the rest of the series, including the best-of-three finals scheduled to start next week.

"Glenn has decided that he needs to be with his family in the immediate future and we completely support that decision," Hohns said.

"Our thoughts are with Glenn and Jane at what is a very difficult time."

McGrath, 35, has not made any decision on whether he will be available for Australia's upcoming 45-day tour of South Africa. The squad is due to leave Australia on February 20.

McGrath's English-born wife Jane has twice been diagnosed with cancer before. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 then bone cancer in 2003 but made a full recovery both times.
